Brief Description:
The name "Mandalay" is actually taken from an ancient
inland temple city in Myanmar. Although the real Mandalay is in Southeast Asia, the
hotel casino is decked out like a South Seas beach
resort, complete with the scent of coconut oil drifting
through the casino and pagodas and gardens rising out of
the vast casino floor. Unlike other properties, such as
Excalibur or Paris, Mandalay is well organized, with
wide open spaces and broad, pleasant walkways. Among
Strip hotels, it's cultivated one of the hippest and
classiest clienteles: those seeking luxury without all
the hullabaloo and ostentation of the Venetian or
Bellagio.
This fun, imaginative hotel has some unusual elements,
such as a lagoon complete with a huge wave pool (8-foot
waves, roughest waters on the Strip), a ¾-mi-long "lazy
river" pool, and a man made beach! |

There's also the dramatic Shark Reef aquarium and the
rollicking House of Blues music club and restaurant. The
selection of trendy restaurants, the distinctive and
offbeat upscale shops, the presence of a Four Seasons
hotel, and the recent addition of the glamorous
all suites THEhotel property all contribute to the
property's cool without trying too hard vibe. And here's
another plus: because it's at the south end of the
Strip, it's a bit out of the way and pulls in relatively
fewer gawking sightseers than some of the more centrally
located hotels.
HOTEL:
Mandalay Resort has three distinct hotel options:
there's the main hotel tower described here; the Four
Seasons, which occupies the main tower's upper floors;
and THEhotel, an entirely separate all suites property
in its own massive tower. The main hotel is the more affordable and less
fabulous lodging component of Mandalay Bay. It's a first rate property with cavernous
rooms. Bathrooms have
understated, elegant stone floors and counters as well
as deep soaking tubs with separate showers. The sleeping
and living areas are outfitted with his and hers lighted
closets and large beds with plush linens. The breezy,
low-key decor is luxurious without being overbearing.
CASINO:
Drool at the hordes of fabulous beautiful people and
millionaires crowding the tables of this very hip and
luxurious high roller casino, which feels more casual
and lively than pretentious counterparts such as
Bellagio or the Venetian. Slot players won't have to
search the dark corners to find one of the abundant
nickel or quarter machines. The sports book is huge but
set off from the main traffic flow. For a break from the action, sit amid the
virtual vegetation, rock waterfalls, and lily pond of
the Coral Reef Lounge, one of the largest lounges in
town.
